Our first meeting is an opportunity for us to get to know each other. I will want to find out what is happening in your life and why that prompted you to seek help. We will speak about how you function in life and your important relationships. This will be your opportunity to share with me what you feel is the most important for me to know. You will get a feel of how I work and we will find out if we can work together. Also I will invite you to ask questions about me and our cooperation. We will agree on the course and length of the cooperation together.
During the first meeting you will also become familiar with the Informed Consent (download here). This document is broadly used as a summary of the rights and regulations of those individuals involved in the process. It recognizes your need to know about confidentiality issues, appointments, and the general course of the treatment. Please review this carefully before you decide to begin treatment. Your signature serves as your agreement to the proposed course of the sessions and your willingness to abide by the guidelines.
Research has shown that the most important factor related to psychological counseling and other approaches outcomes is the quality of the relationship between the therapist and client. To help you the best, I need to be able to get a good idea of what your concerns are. Most importantly, we both need to feel comfortable talking with each other as the chances to succeed are highly based on trust. I would like to start building a trustworthy relationship from the beginning and let the process continue forward.

Stereotypes still persist in our culture about emotional problems and mental health. Actually, emotional problems do not choose who will encounter them. Anyone can experience such situations. Young people, elderly, men, women, children of any social or financial status. Additionally, almost everyone can sometimes experience a buildup of stress that leads to emotional struggles. Plus, anyone who values personal growth and self-awareness can benefit from the possibility of consulting a professional.

I work with clients of diverse ages, gender, and socio-economic backgrounds, various cultures, professions and positions, with different life experiences, and presenting problems.
Frequently, I enjoy discussion of similarities and differences as it is educational and I perceive such diversity as a benefit to gain additional insight.

Research tells us that we tend to weather life’s storms best when we have support of someone else and sometimes it is very helpful to receive assistance from an insightful, objective impartial source. Sometimes, we may unintentionally make our troubles worse by ignoring them or telling ourselves that only weak people ask for help. However, a person who is able to ask for help is actually demonstrating great courage, strength and self-awareness. Think about it: In choosing to see a counselor, you are taking responsibility for your life and making a commitment to better yourself and that takes a great deal of courage.

There is now a significant amount of research that tells us that besides providing support and encouragement the consultations can help with development of problem-solving skills, improve your coping strategies and strengthen your relationships. One important thing for you to know is that the benefits you obtain from the sessions depend in large part on your willingness to challenge yourself, make changes, be honest with yourself and try out new ways of being. This is not an easy task but it has the potential to help you lead a more fulfilling life.

Based on what we discuss in our initial meeting, we will continue meeting in the interval we choose together. In most cases it is one consultation a week or every two weeks and we will decide together how best to proceed. Within the consultations you will encounter many thought-out questions and potentially agreed upon tasks that might surprise you and often help to resolve troubling situations. Because the sessions are tailored to your specific needs, the length of the cooperation can vary. It will depend on the types of concerns you have and your individual goals. Some people feel satisfied already after 4-6 sessions. The process that is started in the first session continues outside and for the next session the client usually experiences partial improvement that he has outside the session. Significant improvement of the situation can therefore happen even in two sessions. For those who seek the possibility of personal growth, long term and less intensive options of meeting are more common. We will regularly review your progress and the goals is to fine-tune our work together, deciding when you have reached a good stopping point. It is never a problem to follow up on our meetings in the future with different tasks. One of another possibilities is to schedule our meetings irregulary in order to maintain and monitor the problem situation.

This does sometimes occur. In this event we will evaluate the course of our cooperation, try to determine what is preventing progress. It may however be the case that my approach is not best suited to the client’s situation. Occasionally, I may choose to refer clients out to other helping professionals. I believe I am in most cases able to create comfortable and trustful environment for our cooperation but if for some reasons this is not possible, I will help you to find someone who will be a better match.
